Tiger Woods' Return From Back Surgery

Playing golf can put a lot of strain on your spine. However, if you have an existing back or neck condition, the pain can often become unbearable and prevent you from playing the game you love. Pro golfer Tiger Woods is living proof that outpatient spinal fusion can stop your pain and allow you to keep playing.

Tiger’s Recent Success

As the world’s most recognizable golfer and athlete, Tiger finished with a 9-under-par total of 275 to claim second place at the 2018 Valspar Championship this past weekend. Tiger Woods also finished in the top-12 earlier this year at The Honda Classic.

So what is his secret to success? After countless hours on the range and undergoing three previously failed back surgeries, Tiger Woods was still searching for a cure for his chronic back pain. Having met with several specialists far and wide, he decided to move forward with a lumbar fusion surgery that involved removing the L5-S1 intervertebral disc and inserting a spacer to connect the L5 and S1 vertebral bodies. Implants are placed to augment the fusion and act as a brace to lock the vertebrae in place. According to a recent study by Shifflett et al. 2017, 34 golfers underwent back surgery in which 77% were able to play the same amount of golf or more than before fusion surgery. This percentage is lower than Deuk Spine’s outpatient fusion surgery rate where over 95% of patients experience pain relief.
